Foundation to Raise Funds for City Events

The Other College Park Foundation

The Other College Park Foundation

Earlier this month, the City Council formed a foundation called “College Park Foundation” in order to help raise funds for various city events and projects.

Such funds may support existing projects such as College Park Day, or other new events such as “an arts and performance space, providing support and services for homeless people, or other cultural events” – said council member Patrick Wojahn.

The foundation is modelled after other similar charitable foundations such as Columbia Foundation that raises funds for various events and projects in Howard county.

The foundation will also help the citizen driven projects such as College Park Day to keep track of donations made by private entities. Currently any unused part of these donations go to City’s general funds and managed by the City staff.

I was a little surprised to see that the City picked up a name which is the same as another College Park Foundation; the latter being operated by the University of Maryland. More can be found about U-Md College Park Foundation can be found at : http://www.foundation.umd.edu

Council Approves ‘Neighborhood Friendly’ Skate Park Design

A skate park desiged by Gridline

The City Counci last night approved the design of College Park’s first skate park.

The skate spot will be built within the confines of Sunnyside Park on Rhode Island Avenue just north of Edgewood Road.

Exactly a year ago, (on Mar 22, 2010), the City awarded Seattle-based Grindline Skateparks (http://www.grindline.com/) a contract to design and build a skateboard park in Sunnyside Neighborhood Park in north College Park

The City held two public hearings on the park, one in April and another in June last year.

In October last year, the park’s design went through a few major revisions, after receiving concerns from M-NCPPC and some residents on children’s safety in the proposed park.

According to the new design, the park’s bowl wil be much shallower (four feet) compared to the previous one, which was more more than seven feet deep. The new design is expected to attract more beginning skaters and would be more safe for the community and easier to maintain. There will also be an addition of a stair element to the new design, and Grindline presented the design at last week’s worksession.

M-NCPPC continues to have concems about maintenance and has requested that the City provide assistance. The City Manager and Public Works Director indicated that supplemental maintenance could be provided as part of the City’s routine park maintenance program.

College Park Day, 2010

After the grand success of the first College Park Day 2010, the organizing committee has already started gearing up for this year’s event – College Park Day, 2011. The date has been set at October, 2011; please mark your calender.

The organizing committee members have already met twice this year to brainstorm about this year’s event activities. They also have looked into what they did last year and can be done to improve this year’s event.

We’re also seeking volunteers to help out in various subcommittees, such as activities, community groups , food, publicity, public safety, logistics and fundraising.

Event volunteers will be in full force at the Maryland Day, 2011 to spread the words about College Park Day 2011. This year’s Maryland Day will be on April 30 (from 10-4). Please contact me if you want to volunteer.

College Park Day Gets an Event Planner

Denise Seifried (in the middle)

As the preparation for the second annual College Park Day gets underway, the event organizers and volunteers were presented with its first “official” event planner.

I use the word “official”, because so far, the event has been run purely by volunteers. That is going to change with the introduction of Denise C. Seifried, our new event planner.

The City budget has allocated $10,000 to hire an event planner in its FY2012 budget. This extra money helped us to hire Denise to organize our 2011 event (hint: we still have some cash left, shh!).

Denise is no stranger to College Park. She is currently employed at the University of Maryland, College Park, in the Conference & Visitor Services Department as a Program Manager tasked to manage a portfolio of 38 concurrent summer programs that brings in over $12M in annual funding to the university.

Her professional experience encompasses over 16 years working for top ranked universities on both coasts, as well as work with nonprofit organizations, entertainment companies, and city/county entities specializing in direction of major special events, including development, athletic, entertainment, and community projects. Her work over the years has involved extensive interaction and/or presentations with major corporations, donors and administrators, national and international government officials, celebrities, students, vendors, and the general public.

Denise is not an usual run of the mill event planner – with a degree in Landscape Architecture, and an eye for design she has been able to use both the left and right sides of my brain to not only handle the logistics and planning aspects of an event – but she has also been the designer of printed materials, posters and websites, as well as designing décor and the flow of an event from the guests perspective to create a balanced and enjoyable experience for them.

Her event career began as the logistics director for a bicycle ride that encompassed 2,500 cyclists, 500+ volunteers, and 50 staff that went from San Francisco to Los Angeles over a 7 day period and covered some 535 miles; travelled through countless city and county entities that required street, and highway permitting; involved an armada of vehicles (24’ trucks, 15’ box trucks, busses, cargo vans, passenger vans), enlisted the help of a team of Doctors, Nurses, Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, Acupuncturists to help the injured, tired, and sore cyclists; included working tirelessly with the California Highway Patrol to keep the riders safe; managing media requests to city, state, and national media outlets; not to mention coordinating six large parks needed to house a small city over 3,000 people in tents each night along with shower trucks, porta johns, and a crew to feed the hungry riders as she moved 60 – 90 miles each day down the winding roads of California.

After the ride, she began working with local community organizations on their fundraising events, as well as volunteering my time to be on committees for the City of West Hollywood’s Halloween Carnival and Parade, and the City of Santa Monica Women’s Baseball Association.

Prior to her families move across the country to Maryland in 2008, she was the senior staff member responsible for administration and management of daily academic and event facility scheduling for the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Denise oversaw 249,000 sq. ft of interior and 30,000 sq. ft. of exterior multi use spaces that played host to more than 800 annual events and conferences. She was also the director in charge of all of the schools signature events including commencement, fundraising dinners, and distinguished speakers programs.

Denise was present at last night’s College Park Day planning committee meeting at the City Hall, and was introduced to the event’s volunteers.

Welcome aboard to College Park Day, Denise!

My Home, My Community

College Park, as part of its celebration of the College Park community on the second annual College Park Day, October 22, 2011, is again hosting a poster contest for local schoolchildren.

Entitled “My Home, My Community,” the contest asks College Park’s children to use pencil, crayon, and paint or pictures to show how they see their home and the community they live in. The child’s poster should demonstrate what they value about the City of College Park and the area around it.

Thinking about “My Home, My Community” can emphasize different things to different people. The seal of the City of College Park reflects the values of education and the presence of the University of Maryland, freedom of religion, the City’s former presence of WW II industry and the presence of the world’s oldest airport. What does it mean to you?

Prizes will be awarded in two classifications, grades 1 – 3 and grades 4 – 6, one for each school.

The deadline for submission is October 15, 2011.

Winning artists will be selected by the school where the entries are submitted. Winning artists will receive prizes such as certificates/trophies from the City of College Park, free administration to the College Park Aviation Museum, College Park Day souvenirs, books and more.

For more information, please contact contest organizing committee at cpdayevents@gmail.com

College Park Day, 2010

It’s difficult to think that one year has passed since we had our first College Park Day.

I can still remember that day vividly – how we gathered at the College Park Community Center and started to setup the booths in the early morning. Joe (Smith) helped me in setting up some 70 posters, beautifully done by our school children, inside the community center’s gymnasium.

As the morning passed, things started to come in order – the food area, the central stage, games and kids activities area – everything was ready for the “real” action.

Then folks started to come in – young and old, residents and students, Whites, African American and Latinos, Christian, Jews Hindus and Muslims – you name them. It felt like a little College Park coming together to show its rich diversity and heritage.

What Joe (Smith) and I dreamed several months before last year’s event and a bunch of kind College Park officials later helped us in turning this into reality, we were all witnessing a history in making. It was truly an exciting moment for everyone present on that day, at that momentous event.

Since the first College park Day passed, the organizing committee had some good news to celebrate. The Mayor and Council gave us some money to hire our very own event coordinator, Denise Seifried. Denise has been a very big help in taking care of a lot of work that volunteers had been doing in the past year.

Like last year, a lot will be happening this year. And in fact many more are in store for you this year. Check our website http://CollegeParkDay.org to find more about the event and how to get there.

Not sure yet, if you should be going to this year’s College park Day? Remember you will have to wait one full year to have another chance – to have the opportunity to celebrate the day for the entire College Park.

See you all there tomorrow.

Poster_CoolNotSoCool Poster_IKEA poster_Traffic

In the past two College Park Day events, I had the opportunity to organize a school poster contest involving the city’s 6 school students. The event turned out to be extremely successful with some 70 entries from the students.

A big part of that success is attributed to the principals and staff of our schools. They spent many hours guiding their students on the posters and going out extra miles in getting the information they need.

The title of this year’s poster contest was “My Home, My Community”. In our organizing committee, we wanted to excite our students about the city they call their home.

Just to give you an idea about how this contest helped to achieve that goal, here is an example of one poster, which was beautifully done by a student from Berwyn Christian School in north College Park. Here he presented what he likes and doesn’t like about the city. As can be seen in the image above , this young College Parker likes shopping in the City (IKEA) and thinks traffic is a big problem . It looks like he went out to different parts of the city and took pictures for his project.

A poster contest is a very small effort to instill a sense of attachment with our city. I’m sure there are many other joint activities that can be done to make them active citizens of our community.

At the end, we all want them to become successful in pursuing their careers, but at the same time, we also want them to contribute back to the community where they were raised.

One Community, One Vision

A few weeks ago, I took a class with a number of my colleagues on our Council and other council members in a few other cities and municipalities across the country. The class was organized by the International Town and Gown Association (ITGA), that mainly focuses its activities to improve relationship between the University and the long time residents in the city.

College Park, being the home of the University of Maryland, is not quite different from any other university town in the country. It has the same kind of challenges, such as noise, public safety, trash / litters and other code enforcement related issues that other college towns are facing.

At the end of the course, we were divided into groups and were assigned to work on real world project that they want to work on. Our group comprised of council members / officials from the City of College Park, Prince George’s County, the University of Maryland and the Prince George’s Property Owners’ Association (PGPOA). After several days of brainstorming and discussion we cam up a project that we named “One Community, One Vision”.

First, we identified the stakeholders in this project. The list is long:

 • Long term residents
 • Community Associations: Berwyn, North, Wood, Lakeland
 • Businesses
 • Non profits: MNCPPC
 • Associations: PGPOA
 • Local, County and State Government
 • Public/Private Schools
 • Faith Based Organizations
 • Local Community Leaders
 • Faculty/Staff
 • Students on and Off Campus

We also planned to to form small focus groups in order to see input from larger communities from these larger groups.

We also identified programs and Activities to showcase this project. The include

 • College Park Day
 • Good Neighbor Day
 • College Park 101 – A course we proposed new UMd students to take in the Spring Semester. This includes brief history of College Park, Cultural and Recreational Sites, Services for the community
 • Produce a few multimedia (videos) Here and here are two sample YouTube Videos:

We also planned to produce a brochure / pamphlet for the new students, titled “Practical Guide for Living Away from home”. This will include How to find information:

 • Where to find the services:
 • How to behave and be a member of the community:
 • How to serve on the community

We also planned to have an annual survey among the parents, students, and residents.

Teh group intends to work on this project in the coming weeks and months. I will let you know as we make progress.
